The basic training for Tendai ministers is held at Hieizan gyo-in at Mount Hiei, Tendai
denomination's headquarters between Kyoto and Shiga Prefectures. It is a two months
disciplined training divided into two parts. First month is learning basic training and practices. It
is called "zen-gyo." The second month is called "ke-gyo" or further training including the fire
ritual. Further trainings are held at Mount Hiei. The ultimate training is called 1,000 days "Sen
nichi kaiho-gyo," meditating, walking and circling the mountain in an ascetic practice in quest to
become "Hotoke," to become enlightened. This training takes seven years to complete.
At Mt. Hiei, the light of the "Undying flame of the Dharma," lit over 1,200 years ago by Dengyo
Daishi never once having gone out, still burns today in the Konponchudo Hall.
