National Survey of R&D 2013
4.3.2 Headcount and Proportion of Researchers by Gender
Figure 4.7 indicated the proportion of female to male researchers in the business sector from
2000 to 2012. Female participation in R&D steadily increased from 2009 to 2011. From the total
6,247 researchers reported in 2012, 1,926 (30.83%) were female, which indicated a slight
decrease from the reported 1,930 (30.51%) in 2011. From 2009 to 2012, the percentage of
female researchers was above 30%.

4.3.3 FTE of Research Personnel
Figure 4.8 reported the full-time equivalence (FTE) of research personnel, which was the
amount of time research personnel had spent in a year on R&D activities. The total FTE of
research personnel reported in 2012 was 10,170.73, which was an increase from 9,778.01 in
2011 and 9,117.57 in 2010. The largest FTE was reported in 2012 by researchers (5,596.36),
followed by technicians (2,327.77) and support staff (2,246.60). The FTE of technicians declined
from 2,665.44 in 2011 to 2,327.77 in 2012.
