BIOLOGY & LIFE SCIENCES
GENES, MUTATIONS, EVOLUTION, AND SICKLE CELL
Kit #902S
In this two-part activity, students follow the inheritance of a hemoglobin mutation (sickle cell)
that leads to changes in protein structure and function . Initially, students identify patterns
over two generations, investigate the cause-and-effect relationship between environmental
conditions and the frequency of a trait, then construct explanations for how changes to a gene
can influence an organism’s ability to survive and reproduce. In Part 2, students use a computer
simulation to extend their investigation through 30 generations . The simulation allows students
to adjust the environmental conditions to see how access to resources and the prevalence of
malaria influence the distribution of the hemoglobin gene over time.
Accommodates unlimited classes, each with eight groups of students.
