What is a verb?
什么是动词？

A verb can express:
动词可以表示：
✤ An action 动作 : come, kick, like, pay, mop, call…
✤ A state of being 状态 : is, am, are, was, were

The students exercise. (‘Exercise’ is an action.)

They are happy. (‘Are’ shows a state.)

1. When a verb describes a state, we do not use the continuous tense.
当动词描述一种状态时，我们不用进行式。
The door is big. (3)
The door is being big. (7) (continuous tense)

The road was wet. (3)
The road was being wet. (7) (continuous tense)

2. When a verb describes an action, we can use the continuous tense.
当动词描述一个动作时，我们可以用进行式。
The students cross the road. (3)
The students are crossing the road. (3) (continuous tense)

The motorcyclists wore helmets. (3)
The motorcyclists were wearing helmets. (3) (continuous tense)

Sometimes, we have to add an object after a verb when the verb requires a
recipient.
有时，当动词需要接收者时，我们必须在动词后面添加一个宾语。
