which was a great relief to us after the long
walk. We were then given helmets to wear
with torches and also body harnesses for
safety purposes and were informed about
all safety procedures and how to behave in
the area and when inside the volcano.
We proceeded to the top of the volcano
to reach the mouth. Here just before
entering the mouth, we were given a small
briefing by the guide giving the details of
the Thrihnukagigur volcano. The craters
opening is app. 4 x 4 meters.
We were then led to the cage which was
a German bult one. The cage or basket
is similar to a window cleaning cage for
tall buildings connected to a crane that
is placed vertically over the crater mouth
and can carry app. 5-6 people. Massive
cable wires move the basket up and down.
Once inside the basket we were locked to
it by our harnesses to ensure safety of the
passengers
We are apprehensive, curious and at the
same time EXCITED..
All the guides are highly trained and
experienced mountain guides and cave
explorers. One expert guide will be placed
at the top of the crater, one will control and
be in the basket with passengers, and one
will be located on the ground of the magma
chamber.
INSIDE THE VOLCANO
There are more that have been in space
than have been in a volcano. We were
lowered slowly inside the volcanic chamber.
In a cage The 120 m (400 ft ) journey took
about 6 minutes to complete. The slow
speed is to ensure the safety of passengers,
but also to provide the opportunity to enjoy
the amazing scenery.
It was a strange feeling being slowly
swallowed up by the mouth of a volcano.
For some time we went down through the
tube like opening and we were amazed to
see the colorations on the walls closely.
At some places we could see the melted
