Crystal Lagoons Corp. is a Chile-based land
development company that created the technology
to turn dry land into what they call the world’s largest
swimming pools. They can cover acres of land,
typically at a depth of at least 8 feet, and allow for
both swimming and water sports, which might not
already be available.
The company’s first Crystal Lagoon was in San
Alfonso del Mar and covers 20 acres and is more
than a half-mile long.
Crystal Lagoon’s advanced ultrasound technology
system, uses thousands of sensors to keep the water
Water slide crystal clear. Epperson’s lagoon encompasses 16
million gallons of water - it is estimated that it will
use 50 times less water than a park of the same
size, and 30 times less water than an 18-hole golf
course. Crystal Lagoons also use 100 times less
chemicals than a swimming pool and up to 50 times
less energy than conventional pool filtration systems.
“The lagoon at Epperson will truly be a first-of-
its-kind amenity, not only in this region, but in the
entire nation,” said Jen Austin, marketing director
of Metro Development Group. “There is nothing
like it, and it’s why so many people are buying
homes at Epperson.”
The lagoon, which is 10-12 feet at its deepest
with 16 million gallons of water on 7-acres offers
Water based obstacle course
kayaking, stand-up paddle-boarding, in-water
obstacle course, water-slide and rock climbing,
along with the beach area, and “Gasparilla Island”
with loungers – and a swim-up bar and private
cabanas.
“It’s a pretty amazing idea of bringing crystal,
clear water — this amount of water, this size, into
a residential community. It’s something that’s never
been done before. We’re really excited to offer this
through the Epperson community,” Eric Wahlbeck,
managing Director of Metro Lagoons said recently.
“What we’re excited about is getting the residents in
here and allowing them to start enjoying the space.”
The lagoon’s water temperature fluctuates with the

ground temperature. “In the summer, it’s going to
be like the Gulf (of Mexico),” he added.
In addition to Epperson Lagoon, Metro is also
building Mirada Lagoon, which promises to be
twice the size of Epperson at 15 acres, and also two
additional planned lagoons one in Southshore Bay
in Southern Hillsborough (Tampa), and Brightwater
in Ft. Myers.
Beyond the single-family homes, a town center
is also under construction on 103 acres on the
north side of the Lagoon that will include 256
townhouses, 200 apartments, 209,000 square
feet of commercial space, 50,000 square feet of
office, and 100 room hotel.
