From enemy to family
Ashleigh Cooke is a
descendent of love between
“enemies”. Both her
grandmothers met their
partner in Germany during
World War II and became
war brides in the U.S. when
the war ended. Their
children (Ashleighs parents)
met at a military reunion in
Ford Ord. Ashleigh identifies
with both America and
Germany. She looks into her
family history and ads
nuance to the consisting
stereotype that all Germans
were nazi’s.
During the battle these men did not know they would
become family after the war. Their common descendent Ashleigh brings nuance in the stereotype that all Germans were nazi’s in World War
