A Guided Future
Industries across the world are undergoing a major
overhaul, thanks to the massive data collected over
the internet (read 3.5 billion searches per day on
Google). With the internet moving from desktop to
smartphones and now even smart-glasses, every day
data is increasing in bulk. And technology such as big
data analytics is transforming this data into information
and then insights. As we stand on the brink of
Industrial Revolution 4.0, engineering combined with
technology is set to change the way we live.
Engineering is one of the most in-demand and
well-paying professions, and will continue to remain so
in the years to come. Engineering firms are strongly
positioned as the builders of a smart, inter-connected
world. As governments and the private sector work
towards infrastructure upgrades and smart-city
megaprojects, a skilled and driven workforce will
always be required.
Given the opportunities and potential challenges,
intelligent engineering is devising a solid digital
road map that uses the Internet of Things (IoT)
in industrial sectors and applications, new
communication infrastructure technology such as
augmented reality to aid the manual process, and
smart factories to usher in a new era of efficient
production. Additive manufacturing i.e. the ability
to produce 3-D objects from materials such as
plastic, metal and concrete, generative designs where
engineers use artificial intelligence (AI) and the power
of cloud computing to create design solutions that
would probably never have been conceived by the
human mind, are uncovering new ways of solving
problems.
As the younger generation prepares itself to enter
the workforce in such a dynamic environment,
engineering schools must pursue a new type of
learning – learning that is engineered to react to the
evolving needs and demands of the world; learning
that uses a combination of technology and human
power to take engineering a notch higher every day.
