Gravity explains the motions of the planets, but it cannot explain who sets the planets in motion

Newton recognized that a force of some kind must be acting on the

planets to keep them in nearly circular orbits .

Extending this idea , Newton proposed that everybody in this

universe attracts every other body . This led to the discovery of the

famous law of universal gravitation .
