Hitchhiking: the golden answer to budget travel! It doesn’t cost a cent, plus you can meet interesting people
and get a sneak peek into their lives. As much as I love hitchhiking, I also enjoy picking up hitchhikers when
I’m driving. I had a memorable experience in a small town in the mountains of Bulgaria—I met the hitchhiking
grannies!
While I was wondering whom to ask for directions, I saw three grannies by the roadside waving. I stopped to
ask them, only to realise that they were actually hitchhiking, not waving. In mere seconds, all of them crammed
into my car. It turned out they owned potato farms high in the mountains. They hitchhiked every single day to
get there to take care of their potato crop.
When I stopped to let them out, one threw a banknote into the car and dashed away. At my perplexed look,
the third granny explained that the runaway hitchhiker had just received news of a newborn great-grandson
that morning. She wanted me to drink a coffee to his health. So, I did! For all their hard work every day, they’ve
reached a ripe old age!
