(ii) Singular and plural nouns
1. Singular means one. Plural means more than one.
2. We form plurals in the following ways.
• chairs
• houses
for most nouns, add -s
• pencils
• motorcycles
• benches
for nouns ending in -ch, -s, • bushes
-sh, -ss and –x, add -es • buses
• dresses
• boxes
• baby – babies
for nouns ending in –y and • berry – berries
How to form the letter before it is a consonant, • fry – fries
plurals remove -y and add -ies • city – cities
• thief – thieves
for nouns ending in –f or –fe, • leaf – leaves
remove -f/-fe and add -ves • knife – knives
Exceptions: • roofs
• hoofs
• mouse – mice
irregular nouns • ox – oxen
have different spelling • cactus – cacti
• man – men
Common English Mistakes
Don’t use ‘a’ or ‘an’ with some plural nouns for clothes and tools – binoculars; glasses; tweezers;
shorts; trousers. You must use plural verbs with these words.
Example:
✓ He is wearing sunglasses. The sunglasses are expensive.
✗ He is wearing a sunglasses. The sunglasses is expensive.
