Practice 3
Read the story below and answer the questions that follow.
Jamil has never been the wisest person when it comes to spending money. He spends
money like water. He also has this terrible habit of spending beyond his means, just to show
off his luxurious lifestyle. In order to achieve this, he would shamelessly cry crocodile tears
to borrow money from his friends. Once getting his hands on the money, he never returns it!
One day, his mother fell terminally ill. She needed an emergency surgery which requred
him to fork out a whooping RM200,000. Being neglectful, he never thought of purchasing
insurance for his mother, where the insurance would have covered the cost of the surgery.
His careless attitude has made him to turn to his friends for the money to cover the expenses.
His friends, who were now very alert refused to believe his stories and did not want to lend
him any more money.
He was also not able to take a loan from the bank as he had been blacklisted for not
paying back the instalments to the bank on a timely basis. While he stood there dumbfounded,
not knowing what to do, Jamil’s mother had breathed her last.
He truly regretted for the person he had turned out to be. He realised that no amount
of luxury would be able to return his mother to him now.
