4     Conjunctions (and, or, but, so)










                    We use conjunctions − and, or, but, so – to join words and groups of words.

                        and – used to join two ideas that are the same
                              • Eliza bought a few pencils.      Eliza bought a few exercise books.
                                        • Eliza bought a few pencils and exercise books.

                        or – used to show choices
                            • Do you want coffee?      Do you want tea?
                                     • Do you want coffee or tea?

                        but – used to join two different ideas

                              • Mr. Nick is rich.      Mr. Nick is stingy.
                                    • Mr. Nick is rich but stingy.

                        ‘so’ – used to show result
                              • Neeta was late for work.      Neeta took a taxi.
                                • Neeta was late for work so she took a taxi.










                        I have a book. I have a pen.                 Ali is fat. His brother is thin.
                        I have a book and a pen.                     Ali is fat but his brother is thin.











                     Do you want to wear jeans or shorts?      Mary is late, so she is running to school.
