Grammar Whizz Unit 2 Singular and Plural Nouns
Plural nouns are formed in the following ways:
复数名词的构成方式如下：
(i) By adding ‘s’.
加上后缀“s”。
toe – toes leg – legs
fi nger – fi ngers glove – gloves
cake – cakes plate – plates
(ii) For nouns ending in ‘s’, ‘sh’, ‘ch’ and ‘x’, add ‘es’.
以“s”“sh”“ch”和“x”结尾的名词，加上后缀“es”。
cross – crosses fox – foxes
brush – brushes dress – dresses
patch – patches eyelash – eyelashes
(iii) By replacing ‘y’ with ‘ies’.
以“ies”取代“y”。
lady – ladies

baby – babies
nappy – nappies lily – lilies
fairy – fairies berry – berries
(iv) By replacing ‘f ’ or ‘fe’ with ‘ves’.
以“ves”取代“f ”或“fe”。
loaf – loaves wife – wives
elf – elves penknife – penknives
calf – calves bookshelf – bookshelves
(v) For nouns ending in ‘o’, add either ‘s’ or ‘es’.
以“o”结尾的名词，加上后缀“s”或“es”。
potato – potatoes hero – heroes
tomato – tomatoes cello – cellos
tornado – tornadoes photo – photos
