The revelation of Landers as the award’s recipient was
a surprise to most in attendance. Leading up to the
moment, Culp wandered the audience, asking for that’s your chamber
adjectives to describe Slovacek and persons who would
be worthy of the award.
Audience members came up with steadfast, commit-
ted, generous, a mentor, compassionate, gracious, dedi-
cated, fearless, selflessness, a servant and genuine.
Ken Donnell, a DPISD board member who knew the
identity of the recipient, said the person should also
help people with their financial investments and be the
winningest basketball coach in Deer Park ISD history.
“If you told me all that, then maybe the Wayne Slo-
vacek Humanitarian Award recipient should be Ray
Landers,” Culp said.
