hen I gave my inauguration speech at the Chamber Banquet
Wmy message was centered on an excerpt from the speech
“Citizenship in a Republic” Theodore Roosevelt gave at the
Sorbonne, in Paris, France on April 23, 1910. The excerpt is known
as “The Man in the Arena”.
It is not the critic who counts; not the man who points out how the
strong man stumbles, or where the doer of deeds could have done them
better. The credit belongs to the man who is actually in the arena, whose face
is marred by dust and sweat and blood; who strives valiantly; who errs, who comes short
again and again, because there is no effort without error and shortcoming;
who at the best knows in the end the triumph of high achievement, and who at
the worst, if he fails, at least fails while daring greatly…
My hope is that we all start each day emulating the man in the arena, and not the one sitting in the stands,
shouting how he would have done it better, but never makes the effort to make a difference.
Prepare yourself to triumph by taking advantage of all the benefits the chamber has to offer its members and get
involved. Attend events, luncheons, and breakfasts.
Hear some great speakers and meet new people who
may very well help you further your business goals.
Join us at committee meetings for Business Growth
and Development, or Legislative and Governmental
Affairs and let us know how we can serve you.
I want to thank Tim Culp and the entire staff
including Grace, Naomi, Wanda, all the ambassadors
and volunteers who do the hard work every day. I
would also like to thank the members of the Chamber
for their continue support.
Let’s all get into the arena and live our best lives, not
afraid to fail.
