Under state law, residents who fail to notify the Dig
Council and cause damage to underground facilities
can be liable for damages, including attorney’s fees, and
subject to civil penalty.
Prior to excavating or trenching, state law requires
residents to obtain the locations of underground cables,
pipes, and related equipment (see RCW 19.122). Please
call the Dig Council at 811 (or 1-800-424-5555) 48 hours
prior to digging. Location services are free.
For private water, irrigation or utility lines, customers will
need to contact the agency or individual directly.
Locations are color-coded per agency. They are as
follows:
• Red — electric
• Yellow — gas/oil
• Orange — telephone/TV
• Blue — water
• Green — wastewater
