3.5.2 Industrial Waste
The analysis of samples of industrial wastes usually is
part of a broader study of the impact og these wastes
on an ecosystem. Esamples are ashes from refuse
incinerators, coal-burning plants (fly-ash), heavy metal
works and semlters. In this area of application the non-
destructive character of NAA can fully be exploited.
3.5.3 Soils and Sediments
The analysis of sewage sludge has also to be con-
sidered. These studies are not restricted to polluted
areas. From trace-element data of materials from "un-
spoiled" areas, more insight is gained on the degree of
elevated concentrations in suspected polluted areas.
3.5.4 Plants, Man, Animal
Almost all environmental studies deal with the impact
of pollution on living organisms. Whereas plant ma-
terial can relatiovely easily be sampled, for man and
animal, bilogical indicators like hair, blood, nails, urine,
and eventually tissues have to be samples. For these
