5 Grammar Time
5.1. Read the following sentences and note the structure.
a. Reena had saved a little money.
b. Saif had won an award in 2007.
c. Pogba had scored twice in a friendly match with Japan.
d. Mr. Woods had written a poem on nature.
e. Seth Rollins had won the title of Heavyweight
Championship some years ago.
g. I had taken the test before I applied for the visa.
The above sentences have the following structure: S+had+v3+O.
We use this structure to talk about something that was completed
before a certain time in the past.
This form of tense is called the Past Perfect Tense.
Past Present Future
Example :
a. They owned a house. They just sold it.
They had owned the house for long before they sold it.
b. He studied English. Then he went to Australia.
He had studied English before he went to Australia.
c. The thief ran away. The police came later.
When the police came the thief had run away.
d. Tirtha paid the bill. They finished eating.
Tirtha paid the bill after they had finished eating.
