          October 9, 2012, a gunman shot Malala when
          she was traveling home from school. She was
          seriously wounded in the head and neck and

          airlifted to a British hospital for specialized
          treatment. She survived, and has continued
          to speak out on the importance of education
          for girls. In 2013, Time magazine put her on
          its list of the world’s most influential people
          and  in  the  same  year  she  was  nominated
          for a Nobel Peace Prize. In 2014,  she was
          nominated  again  and  won,  becoming  the
          youngest person (at age 17) to receive the                Malala Yousafzai
          Nobel Peace Prize. She was given the Nobel
          Peace Prize with Kailash Satyarthi, an Indian activist and founder of the
          Global March Against Child Labor. The two shared a prize of 8.0 million

          Swedish kroner, or roughly 1.1 million US dollars, so each received about
          $550,000.
