Mourning Picture is a famous painting prepared by Edwin Romanzo
Elmer, a less known artist from Massachusetts, USA. Grieved by the
sudden death of her nine-year-old daughter Effie, Elmer prepared this
picture in love of her beloved. The picture got its title decades after
the death of the artist. In 1965 Adrienne Rich was so deeply touched
by the picture that she was inspired to write a poem on it, and thus the
poem was created. The poem is a perfect example of how literature
and art can be the sources of inspiration for each other.
