          4.1.  Know the following idioms with ‘off.’

                a.  call off        :  to cancel
                     Use            :  The friendly match between Nepal  and

                                       Pakistan was called off due to security issues.
                b.  turn off        :  to go off, to switch off

                     Use            :  All the lights in the colony are turned off with a
                                       signal.


                c.  get off         :  to dismount a vehicle, to give up a responsibility.
                     Use            :  Don’t get off the bus in every station.

                d.  take off        :  to leave the ground in order to fly.

                     Use            :  The plane took off a few seconds before

                e.  well off        :  rich, prosperous

                     Use            :  They are  well  off enough to afford a foreign
                                       tour.

                f.  write off       :  to cancel something from accounts or someone
                                       from consideration.

                     Use            :  Tom wrote Shiva off promotion.
                                        The bad debt was written off.
                g.  stand off       :  to stay at a distance, remain apart

                     Use            :  She stood off from the group because she was

                                       annoyed.


                h.  set off         :  to leave for something or some place
                     Use            :  The troop set off for Somalia three hours late.
