Policies and Procedures on Infection Control

                   3.4 Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)

Primary uses of PPE are to protect staff and reduce opportunities for transmission of micro
organisms in hospital. Select protective equipment on the basis of an assessment of the risk of
transmission of microorganisms to the patient, and the risk of contamination of health care
practitioners’ clothing and skin by patients’ blood, body fluids, secretions and excretions.

                3.4.1 Gloves
Glove wearing by HCWs is recommended for two main reasons:

                      1. To prevent microorganisms which may be infecting, commensally carried, or transiently
present on HCWs’ hands from being transmitted to patients and from one patient to
                          another; and
                      2. To reduce the risk of HCWs acquiring infections from patients.
