MEMBERS OF THE Fairhaven Village Militia GROUP OFTEN REENACT REVOLUTIONARY WAR PERIOD
ACTIVITIES AT Fort Phoenix. WHILE VISITING THEIR ENCAMPMENT, YOU MAY HEAR THE MUSIC OF A
TIN WHISTLE, OR THE MIGHTY BLASTS OF THEIR MUSKETS AND CANNONS!
Fairhaven’s fort at Nolscot Point was
attacked and destroyed by the British on
September 5–6, 1778, landing 4,000
troops in New Bedford. When the fort
was rebuilt following the attack, it was
named Fort Phoenix after the mythical
bird which rose from its own ashes.
