Messages from the Attorney General & Academy Director
As law enforcement offi cers, you all put your lives on the line every day to keep our
communities safe. At the North Carolina Justice Academy, we are proud to offer the top-notch
instruction you need to fulfi ll your critical duties. You deserve the best training available.
While North Carolina has seen falling crime rates over the last decade – thanks to your
good work – fi ghting crime will always be important. Keeping up with the latest crime trends
will require law enforcement agencies trained with the newest technology and methods. The
Justice Academy is committed to providing just that.
As Attorney General, protecting the people of North Carolina is my top priority. The work
you do is essential to keeping our communities safe. If you have suggestions for making our
state’s law enforcement even stronger, please share them with the Justice Academy Staff or
me.
Thank you for your vital service to the people of North Carolina.
Very truly yours,

Renowned psychologist Abraham Maslow wrote, “In any given moment we have two
options: to step forward into growth or to step back into safety.” As the premier law enforcement
training academy in North Carolina we have 49 sister academies across the country. Here,
we strive to be ‘#1 in 50’ as opposed to simply one of the 50. Taking the step forward into
growth is necessary in order to do that.
On March 5, the NCJA implemented a 3-year strategic plan designed to meet the
evolving training needs of our stakeholders. We have reorganized our staff to ensure we are
offering the best services, while adding additional instructors. We are refocusing our training
menu to ensure the most critical courses are made available to NC offi cers. Online delivery
of our courses continues to grow, making mandated and career development training more
convenient. Later this year we will unveil our brand-new Telecommunications Simulator, and
begin renovating the ‘C’ Residence Hall on our Salemburg Campus. Add to that a new NCJA
smartphone ‘App’ and an on-line version of our bookstore, and our growth is evident in ways
both large and small.
In keeping with our mission of enhancing the careers of criminal justice offi cers, our
primary focus is in the development and delivery of training. To that end we are also stepping forward into growth. New courses
such as Crime Prevention Specialist, Forensic Analysis for Patrol Offi cers, Critical Incident Stress Management, Basic
and Tactical Patrol Rifl e Operator, and a newly re-written Basic Narcotics Investigator course represent our commitment
to providing professional and relevant training for our stakeholders.
Come see us in Salemburg, or at our Edneyville campus, where this fall we will be celebrating our 20th year of serving
the criminal justice community. I encourage you to follow us on Facebook, Twitter, and our website for the most up-to-date
information. We look forward to seeing you very soon!
