Kutch, Gujarat

1. Title of the Project:
Diversity, palaeobiogeography and palaeoecology of Miocene gastropods from India with
special emphasis on Kutch, Gujarat.
2. Name of Proposing Scientists:
Shiladri Shekhar Das
3. Brief objectives and justification:
India was a moving plate during the major part of the Caenozoic (Palaeocene to Oligocene)
(see Smith et al., 1994). It drifted north-ward from the southern hemisphere. Diversity and
biotic composition also changed with time and latitude. In this background the
palaeobiogeography and diversity of the Miocene gastropod in India have been studied in
Kutch and Dwarka basins.
Documentation of the spatio-temporal change of biodiversity and structure of taxonomic
composition of the Indian Miocene gastropod have been attempted.
Quantitative analysis has been undertaken to document these ecological (prey-predator)
interaction during the Miocene, western India.
Spatial variability of drilling predation is a rule rather than exception. To make a testability
of this hypothesis in a selective stratigraphic interval (Miocene) have been chosen to compare
drilling intensity within India and across continents.
