USHJA NATIONAL HUNTER DERBY
Start time 8:30 a.m.
Entries close at 3:00 pm Monday, July 10th
Post entries will be accepted, but will go to the top of the order.
Course walk will open at 7:30 a.m. and hand walking of horses in the arena will be permitted.
ELIGIBILITY: Open to horses ridden by Juniors, Amateurs or Professionals. Riders are not limited
to the number of horses they may ride. Horses and riders may cross enter into any division for which
they are otherwise eligible. Cross entry into the Low Hunter Derby is not permitted. Cross entry into
the Throwback Hunt & Go Derby is permitted. Riders must complete a USHJA Declaration Form at
least 1 hour prior to the class to receive Zone Horse of the Year points. See a complete list of USHJA

JUDGING: To be scored under the open numerical judging system. The top 12 will return for the
second round in reverse order of their scores. Scores will be added to determine the winners. In the
case of a tie, judges will confer to break the tie.
COURSE REQUIREMENTS:
First Round: To be shown over a hunter classic type course of at least 10 fences 3' in height with
four 3'5" options. Fences to simulate those found in hunting country, including natural post and rail,
stone wall, white board fence, coop, aiken, hedge, brush, logs and natural foliage. To be judged on
performance, hunter pace and style, quality, substance and movement. After the judges base score is
given, one point will be added for each high option fence jumped. The Option Bonus Score of one
additional point must be awarded even if there is a refusal, rail down or loss of good jumping style at
that higher height option fence, providing that the horse-and-rider combination does jump the higher
height option fence.
Second Round: To be shown over a hunter handy type course of at least 8 fences 3', with 3'5"
options. To include elements such as roll-backs, tight turn options, trot jumps, hand gallop, halt and/or
back, or work through a gate while mounted. To be judged on performance, hunter pace, style, qual-
ity, substance and movement, handiness and brilliance of pace. Handiness is defined as ground saving
movement without adversely affecting performance or style. Brilliance of pace is defined as a faster
pace than ordinary, without sacrificing performance or style.
AWARDS: Trophy & Ribbons 1st-12th
