INTER-MARRIAGES
Intermarriage :
marriage between people of
different religions, tribes, castes,
ethnicities, or racial groups, as
between a white person and a
Black person or between a
Christian and a Muslim.
marriage between people of
different social classes.
Brooke attitudes and policies affected mixed marriages and this is linked to
the regional picture of Chinese migration out of China to the “south seas”
(Nanyang) in southeast Asia which brought the Chinese to Sarawak.
Chinese migration to 19th century Sarawak like elsewhere in southeast Asia
was largely a male affair.
Initially, for Chinese men living and working in the remote and rural
districts of Sarawak the opportunities for having Chinese female partners or
spouses was absent.
Women from the indigenous communities were the sources of social
companionship and marital unions, a trend which continues to this day.
