Sometimes a dream comes true and the past becomes a dream.
My imagination of the USA was only through the movies I had seen
and the photos my sister had sent me. I had also some knowledge
about the US from art books. With the photos on the net, there was
no sense of being there, but through Google Maps and finding the path,
an imaginary journey could be pictured. Sometimes I traveled briefly
through Google Maps on the American Continent and gradually zoomed
in the streets close to the museums, or universities. The dream came
true and I eventually came to this country, but now the narrative of
traveling with Google Maps is linked to the past. I find my country and
then my city on the map and then I enter the city. I go down the streets
one after the other, to my father’s house, which I had been living for
years. I zoom in more. I see a blurry image, and with the frustration of
not knowing the next time I see my city again, I close Google Maps.
