Modern day computers were conceived from this hypothetical idea of Turing Machine. Alan
Turing's concept showed that a universal machine when fed with instructions can perform
dedicated tasks and generate desired output.
The model of Turing machine states that a single machine can solve different problems or
perform different tasks if the states of the logbook are clearly defined and the instructions
associated with each transition state are well described. Modern computers or other
electronic devices from a theoretical perspective, work in a similar way. Computers are
capable of performing varied tasks, provided the required hardware (memory space) and
software (predefined instructions). The output is generated on the basis of the input
provided by the user. The transition states of Turing machine are analogous to the functions
associated with a software or application. In reality, the memory available for a computer is
not infinite (unlike the infinitely long tape of Turing machine) but huge enough to
accommodate the instructions required to perform a certain task and store the input given
by the user. One of the earliest computers ENIAC was the practical demonstration of Turing
machine. It could run fixed programs and only execute particular computations or tasks. If a
separate task was to be run by ENIAC, the wirings were altered. Hence, Alan Turing is rightly
said the Father of Computer Science.
