Durga Maa, Me and Dodo
Debangsi De
This story is about Durga maa, me and my naughty-sweety brother Dodo. This story will help us in
understanding the use of the weapons gifted to Durga maa by other gods, which represent the ten
directions and well applicable to students like us (especially Dodo). These weapons are meant to
help solve problems.
The first hand from the right is pointed in the upward direction. This direction is also called
'Urdhah'. This hand holds the weapon 'Trishul' (Trident) gifted by Shiva. It's three spikes represent
the past, present and future. The spike in the middle represents the present which is the highest
amongst three. It teaches us that we can do nothing to the past, neither can we do anything about
the future, but we have the present to do something about. So Dodo shall focus on studies instead
of his future dream of becoming 'Shadow the Hedgehog'. I study seriously anyway ;-)
The second hand from the right is pointed in the North direction - 'Uttar'. This hand holds the
'Padma' (Lotus) gifted by Kuber and Brahma. It teaches us to love and respect others. Like Dodo
'must' respect me. I do love Dodo very much.
The third hand from the right is pointed in the North-West direction. This direction is also called
'Vayu Kon'. It holds the weapon 'Tir and Dhanush' (Bow and Arrow) gifted by Vayu. It teaches us to
focus on one thing at a time; be it study or play. So Dodo shall not play during study and I shall not
study while playing :-D
The fourth hand from the right points in the West ('Paschim') direction. It holds the 'Shankha'
(Conch shell) gifted by Varun. It teaches us to listen to self when needed. So we shall focus on our
inner voice when we want to sleep more (even when 'Baba' tries to pull us out of bed).
The fifth hand from the right is pointed in the South-West direction. This direction is also called
'Nyreet Kon'. This hand holds the weapon 'Parashu' (Axe) gifted by Vishvakarma. It teaches us to
destroy every bad thing that comes in our way.
The first hand from the left is pointed towards the North-East ('Eeshan Kon'). This hand holds the
weapon 'Chakra'. It teaches us to respect all lives, as everyone feels the same as we do. So, Dodo
shall respect me as I always respect Dodo.
