I was pretty impressed by it. I felt it was intimidated a lot of miners in the early
very well done.
Interviewer: Which one was that?
R.G. Yoho: It was a book by Scott Harris. I
think Coyote Courage, I believe. And I
thought it was a very well done book.
Interviewer: He’s about to go to number
one with that one. I think he’s like three or
two in the chart at the moment. That’s a
pretty big one.
R.G. Yoho: Yeah, I think I read that pretty
early on. I’m looking forward to meeting
him. I’ve talked to him a little bit on the
phone, but it’d be good to meet some of
these people.
Interviewer: What are you working on at
the moment?
R.G. Yoho: I’m kinda working on two
projects. I’m working on another sequel to
the Kellen Malone series. And, my last
book… ‘course, people at Outlaws hadn’t
had a chance to read it, but it’s actually
called The Evil Day. One of the characters in
it is left in not a very good state and that has
to be resolved. And I plan to resolve that in
this book. I won’t say too much about it,
especially being that it hasn’t been released
yet. I truly love that.
Along with that, I’m pursuing (I mentioned
about that mine wars thing), there’s an
individual named Charles Lively that was
involved in the mine wars. Worked for the
Baldwin-Felts Detective Agency, which
twenties. And they were contemporaries of
the Pinkertons. But this man named Charles
Lively was involved in a lot of the violence
in West Virginia around the coal mine wars,
along with what happened with the Ludlow
Massacre out in Colorado. Charles Lively is
an absolutely fascinating individual, maybe
not a good man, but he’s fascinating. And
I’m trying to pursue him a little bit more
and trying to write a biography of the man.
He committed suicide in Huntington, West
Virginia on May 28, 1962. And I’d love to do
his biography. The man’s never specifically
been written on and he’s an absolutely
fascinating character. He shot a man to
death right on the courthouse steps in
Welch, West Virginia. A man that was
probably—more than likely—unarmed.
Shot him and another man right in front of
their wives. And was acquitted for it, by the
way.
Interviewer: Really? [laughter]
R.G. Yoho: Yes. And the thing… I actually
had a pretty well-known WWA (Western
Writers Association) member profile this
book I wrote. I wrote a fictional account of
much of this, but he used the term, I forget
how he said it, but he said it just shows you
how Western things can get in West
Virginia. It was a pretty wild time back in
that state, and I’m a West Virginian by birth
so that’s why I’m interested in things like
that. But the story behind this man would
be absolutely fascinating, and his story’s
never specifically been told. I’ve traced him
