LIGHTHOUSE HISTORY

At the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the twentieth
century there were over 240 shipwrecks at Sheringham Lighthouse.
It was known as the ‘Graveyard of the Pacific’. The lighthouse was
also designed by William P. Anderson.

On January 22, 1906, the SS Valencia crashed on the shore.

“It looked very complex.” And the Society to protect the lighthouse was formed in 2003.

The school program, “Exploring the Lighthouse”, has won an inter-
national award of excellence. Grade 4-5 students from Sooke Ele-
mentary School and John Muir Elementary School took part in the
program.
