DESEXING YOUR KITTY -
HELP FOR THOSE IN NEED!
Compiled by Deborah Rouse
There are many benefits for desexing your kitty – the major reason is to reduce the mass annual killing of cats in
pounds, shelters and at vets across Australia each year.
The most commonly referenced number is 250,000 for cats and dogs euthanized (unnecessarily killed) across
Australia each year.
Australia should be ashamed, as the UK rate is about a tenth of ours - 25,000, for a nation that has a population
ten times the size of ours! What is going on?
• It is an urban myth that a female cat should be allowed to have one litter.
• It is also an urban myth that a male cat’s testicles are somehow connected to its owner’s, although
psychologically should perhaps be recognised... but still treated ;)
Desexing is the most powerful step you can take to decrease the number of kitties killed each year, and
make an impact on the number that find themselves in pounds and shelters through no fault of their own.
Yes there is some discomfort for your kitty – and you will need to organise, deliver, pick up and keep an eye on
your recovering pet.
If you are not able to afford the costs, don’t put it off:
• shop around – the costs vary from vet to vet, some vets will offer discounts to regular clients,
those clients they know are in need, and also if you have rescued the animal (apologies to these
champion vets who are so kind in offering discounts, and who are making their $ contribution to
animal welfare – also you must be comfortable with any vet you choose who will responsibly look
after your furr-child)
• also contact the National Desexing Network, an Australian national organisation
