Remarks by Amb. (Dr.) Amina Mohamed, EGH, CAV,
Cabinet Secretary, Ministry of Sports, Culture and Heritage
The East African Safari Rally is one of the toughest and most thrilling competitions in the
world, putting Kenya on a pedestal as an ideal destination for Safari Rally enthusiasts.
The competition, which begun as the Coronation Rally in the 1950s before changing its
name to East African Safari Rally in the 60s, drew great international interest prompting the
FIA to include it in its World Rally Championship calendar.

th
run from February 10 to 18 , 2022, promises to stir up the same level of excitement across
the 11 Counties that fall within its course route.
It is expected that 60 participants, 24 of whom are local drivers, will take part in the rally,
which begins in Naivasha and ends in Watamu, Kilifi County, covering a distance of 5,000
kilometres in what promises to be a rip-roaring and action-packed competition.
The East African Safari Classic Rally 2022 will have a profound impact on the country's
economy and the economy of the Counties that will be playing host to the travelling
participants and spectators.
The presence of renowned international rally drivers is also a mark of approval of the
proficiency and professionalism in the planning and execution of this competition, and the
quality of the competition itself, and a boost to our tourism industry.
th
I wish to thank the organisers of the 10 East African Safari Classic Rally for their
commitment and dedication to keep this competition going despite the challenges posed by
the COVID-19 pandemic.
I have received utmost assurance from the organisers that stringent measures have been
put in place to ensure the competition observes FIA safety protocols, and necessary steps
taken to ensure complete adherence to Ministry of Health's COVID19 prevention measures.
And so, as the engines roar and the gears shift, Kenya will be, for another year, the centre
of the world's attention as rally drivers take to the tough terrains to showcase their prowess
in rallying.
I wish you all the best and an absolutely fun-filled event.
