HORSESHOE BEND
The Grand Canyon has been carved out of
the rocks of Arizona by the Colorado River
as it flows west toward the Gulf of California
in the US. Near the beginning of the canyon,
a looping meander created early in the river’s
history has been etched deep into the desert
landscape. The river now lies 1,000 ft (300 m)
below the rim of the canyon.
