LAVA FLOW
Made of melted ocean-floor bedrock,
the basalt lava erupting from Kilauea is
more liquid than the sticky lava that
erupts from typical volcanoes. It flows
rapidly across the island before cooling
and turning to solid rock. The surface
of the lava cools first, often forming a
wrinkled skin of black basalt as the hot,
liquid lava beneath it keeps flowing.
