        Red Sprites

Mechanical Monday with Jeff Red sprites is 30–50-mile electrical discharges that occur high above
thunderstorm clouds (50,000 ft. above Earth!) You’ve probably never seen them because they only last for 1/10th of a
second or less. RGF's Electro-Mechanical Museum Curator Jeff Behary has perfected a way of replicating these elusive
forms of lightning in the lab in an environment where you can study and interact with them up close. Sprites are usually
triggered by discharges of positive lightning between a thundercloud and the ground. To accomplish this in the lab, Jeff
has designed special electrical components adjustable in millionths of an inch. He is currently working with
photographer Kelly McJilton and hopes that in documenting sprites we can learn more about upper atmospheric
lightning and other unusual transient electrical phenomena. His work in this field of research has been acknowledged by
NASA lightning experts at FIT in their geophysics and astrophysics departments.
