BIOGRAPHICAL SKETCH
Of
M⸫W⸫ James R. Hayden
1874-1875
Brother James R. Hayden was elected as Grand Master in
1874. He was born February 22, 1837 in Oswego, New York
and served in the Civil War. He came to Washington Territory
from Chicago in 1870 and for 20 years was a collector of
internal revenue and worked in the federal land office in
Olympia.
He was made a Mason in Blair Lodge, No. 393 of Chicago,
and affiliated with Olympia Lodge, No. 1 in 1870. He served
as its Master in 1872. He was manager of a savings bank in
Seattle and a regent of the University of Washington for a time,
and for numerous years before his death on November 15,
1902 in Seattle he was sovereign Grand Inspector General in Washington for the Scottish Rite,
Southern Jurisdiction.
