A Preface
The world belongs to the monsters. We simply live in it.
Ci es and towns dot the world, n points of light, guttering candles,
fading res against the blackness of the wilderness. The masses huddle
around these meagre comforts while in the vast darkness, mul tudes s r.
The monstrous races of the world far ou umber those who dwell in the
light of civiliza on, yet we are not overwhelmed. Equally, these races are
physically superior; the stealth of the bugbear, the strength of the orc,
and the savager of the gnoll far exceed our own. How then are we, the
civilized people, to win this war? For make no mistake, it is war fought
on a thousand onts.
I have endeavored, over the course of my research, to compile the notes,
trea ses, and rsthand accounts of reliable sources on the most commonly
encountere of the monstrous races, combining them with my own
conclusions and summaries, and presen ng them in what I hope to be an
instruc ve manner.
It is said by the wise that knowledge is the greatest weapon, and to that
en I hope this humble tome provides an armor .
