Recycling
In order to reduce the amount of waste that it discards, and to comply with local and state regulations, Smith has implemented a
comprehensive campuswide recycling program. While at Smith, students are expected to participate in this program.
Recycling containers for paper, bottles, cans and cardboard are located on the main floor or basement of each house and throughout the
academic buildings. In addition, each student room has been provided with a blue recycling bin. Students are responsible for emptying this
bin into the larger barrels at the recycling site for their house.
CFL bulbs, small electronics, ink cartridges, and batteries can be recycled at the electronics recycling center, located on the lower level of the
Campus Center.
Detailed information about what to recycle is posted at the central recycling site in your house. For more information, go to the Smith
recycling site at http://www.smith.edu/green/operations_recycling.php.
Refrigerators
Smith College allows students to have small refrigerators. They must be ENERGY STAR, labeled, and no larger than 3.5 cubic feet. Some
students buy portable refrigerators and keep them here all four years, storing them at a commercial storage company. Portable refrigerators
can also be rented through the following website: http://www.nestudentservices.com.
Because they run 24/7, a micro-fridge is often the number one user of electricity in a room. Each fridge can use upwards of 400 kWh a year
and will generate over 500 pounds of greenhouse gas emissions.
Before renting or purchasing a fridge, please consider that all houses have a shared refrigerator in a common area. Also consider what you will
do with the unit at the end of the year. Sharing a fridge is one of the best ways to save energy.
Laundry
There are coin-operated washing machines and dryers accessible to students in their house. The charge is $1.35 for washing and $1.35 for
drying if you use your Smith OneCard. The coin price is $1.50 for each machine. Problems or concerns regarding these machines should be
directed to the One Card Office, extension 3082. Information about the availability for laundry machines can be found
at www.laundryview.com/smith
Telephones
A house phone is provided in student resident houses and can be used for emergency, on campus, local and toll free calling. Telephones are
also provided in HR, HCA and HC rooms, as well as Conway and Friedman apartments with the same access. Students who require a land
line phone will need to provide their own residential style corded phone and request activation of their telephone jack by emailing the User
Support Center at 4ITS@smith.edu. As with the college provided phones these will be limited to emergency, on campus, local and toll free
calling.
Data Networking
The Smith Residence Network (ResNet) links Smith students to campus computing resources, the on-line library and course catalogs, and the
Internet. In a residence house, you can connect to ResNet wirelessly.
To learn more about ResNet, call the ITS User Support Center at (413) 585-4487 or see our ResNet information
page: http://www.smith.edu/its/services/resnet.html
The Smith College Computer Store can also answer your questions regarding minimum requirements for students computers, computer
upgrades, and network adapters. You can reach the store at (413) 585-3027.
Wireless Computing on Campus
Smith College provides wireless access to Smith's high-speed network across campus, including the Libraries, the Science Center, and all other
academic, administrative and residence buildings.
