TheBattleofSirteisconsideredtobethelastmajor
conflictintheLibyanCivilWarof2011.Thevillageof
Sirte was known to be among the last strongholds held
by supporters of Muammar Gaddafi, and its eventual
defeat to anti-Gaddafi fighters all but spelled the
endofthewar.Thevillagewasallbutdestroyed
in the battle, which raged from 15 September
to 20 October. Gaddafi was captured,
possibly tortured, and killed after
rebel forces successfully
stormed Sirte.
