For farmed fish, look for Aquaculture Stewardship Council (ASC)
certification. Their strict standards minimize the impact of
fish farming on water quality and surrounding habitats and
marine life, require responsible disease management, and
enforce fair wages and good working conditions for work-
ers in the industry, including prohibiting both child labor
                       and forced labor.

Eat low on the food chain, i.e., small fish.
Speak up! Whether you’re buying fish from a small local
purveyor or big-box supermarket, or ordering it at a fast food
chain or fine-dining restaurant, ask questions about origin,
Seafood Watch rating, wild versus farmed, food safety mea-
sures, and so on. The more seafood buyers are pressured
by consumers for this level of transparency, the more likely
suppliers will feel pressured to meet those demands.
