BLACK RUSSIAN TERRIER
THIS BIG, TOUGH, AND VERY PROTECTIVE DOG IS USUALLY FRIENDLY AND MANAGEABLE AKC
Height range First developed in the 1940s, this massively built and hardy
26–30 in (66–77 cm) terrier was the special creation of the Soviet Army in the former
Weight range USSR. The breeders’ aim was to produce a large dog suitable for
83–143 lb (38–65 kg)
military work and able to withstand the severe cold of Russian
Life span 10–14 years winters. Among many breeds used in its development were the
Origin Russia Giant Schnauzer (see p.41), the Rottweiler (see
p.81), and the Airedale Terrier (see p.199).
Still relatively uncommon, the Black Russian
Terrier is becoming more widely recognized
outside its native land. Formidable in size
and appearance, the breed is not naturally
aggressive and with responsible handling Dense beard and
