PROJECT
THE CHALLENGE OF DESIGNING A SPACE IN PROXIMITY
OF A BUSTLING HIGHWAY TRANSLATED INTO A SPACE
WITH A STARKARCHITECTURAL LANGUAGE.
Sidhartha Talwar, Design Prinicpal, Studio Lotus
tructural, bold and
intriguing, this New
Delhi home captures
your interest the
moment you set
your eyes on the facade. Twin interconnected
monolithic cubes with steel and granite
interludes, at once intimidating and
welcoming. It’s almost like an installation that
urges you to stop, stare and wonder!
“The brief was to create two independent
houses in a common plot located next to
busy congested highway of Delhi,” informs
Sidhartha Talwar, Design Principal, Studio
Lotus. “The challenge of designing twin
houses in the proximity of a bustling highway
translated into a residence where a stark
contemporary architectural language created
the ideal milieu for a space richly layered with
handcrafted materials, bespoke furniture and
curated elements.”
The subtle-yet-elegant design narrative is
carried through in the interiors. The colour
palette is muted with some unexpected pops
of colour, lending an element of drama to the
space. The material spectrum, on the other
hand, is quite diverse — the combination of
stone, timber and metal create an ambience
of understated opulence. The curated
collection of artworks, and the clean,
contemporary silhouettes of furniture
complete the design narrative.
The twin cubes, as we have come to
call it, stuns you with its architecture, but
immediately puts you at ease with its warm
and elegant interiors. A balance, which many
would agree, is difficult to achieve!
