0 St Stephen’s Basilica
Szent István Bazilika
Dedicated to St Stephen, or István, the first Hungarian
Christian king (see p24), this church was designed by József
Hild in the Classical style, using a Greek cross floor plan.
Construction began in 1851 and was taken over in 1867
by Miklós Ybl (see p123), who added the Neo-Renaissance
dome after the original one collapsed in 1868. József Kauser
completed the church in 1905. It received the title of Basilica
Minor in 1931, the 900th anniversary of St Emeric’s death.
St Matthew
St Matthew is one of
the four Evangelists
represented in the niches Dome
on the exterior of the Reaching 96 m (315 ft),
dome. They are all the the dome is visible
work of the sculptor from all over Budapest.

Tower
A bell, weighing 9,250 kg
(9.25 tons) is housed in this
tower. It was funded by
German Catholics to
com pensate for the
original bell, which
was looted by the
Nazis in 1944.
Main Portal
The oak wood door is
decorated with carvings
depicting the heads of
the 12 Apostles.
