Elizabeth Bridge to Rákóczi Bridge
Like Paris, Budapest has fully exploited the
opportunities given by its river. The most VÖRÖSMARTY
important and beautiful buildings of Buda TÉR
and Pest crowd along the banks of the
Danube. These include the Royal Palace,
churches, historic palaces and the Gellért
Hotel and Baths Complex.

Royal Palace D anube
The monumental Habsburg Royal Palace that once occupied this
spot was destroyed during World War II, then reconstructed to
reveal defensive walls and royal chambers that date from the S Z A B A D S á G H í D
Middle Ages (see pp74–5) .
Inner City Parish Church
This church (see pp128–9) SZENT GELLÉRT TÉR
was built in the 12th century
on the ruins of Roman Contra
Aquincum’s walls. The spot was,
from early times, an important
place for crossing the river.

to make it as imposing as
possible (see pp94–5).
Technical University
The university campus (see
p161) occupies almost the
entire space between Liberty
Bridge (Szabadság híd) and
Lágymányosi híd.
