Lying at the base of the eastern Andes, Mendoza was
devastated by the 1861 earthquake. Extensively rebuilt,
it now has lush landscaped plazas deco rated with striking
tilework, murals, statuary, and fountains. The heart of the
country’s wine industry, the city is an ideal base from which to
explore many excellent bodegas (wineries) that dot the area.
It draws a large number of foreign tourists through the year,
especially during the city’s wine harvest festival in March.
