                                                                                               German soldiers celebrate Christmas on the frontline near
                                                                                               Verdun. While these men caroused, their fate was being
                                                                                               decided. On 24 December, German high command made
                                                                                                 the decision to press on with Operation Judgement
                                                                                                   – an all-out attack on the French city of Verdun,
                                                                                                    which would begin the following February. The
                                                                                                    nine-month campaign cost both sides dearly –
                                                                                                      approximately 306,000 men were killed
                                                                                                         and nearly half a million wounded.
