What’s your favorite part of
writing Star Wars novels?
I love how the thrill of “I am
writing Star Wars!” never goes
away. Plus the folks at Del Rey
and Lucasfilm are always
100-percent supportive of me
and my work. It makes for a
wonderful environment: to be
creative with people who know
how to navigate the challenges
of this giant shared world.
You’ve written more than 50
novels. How do you produce
so much so quickly?
Well, it’s been 25 years, so I’m not
as fast as some authors! My fi rst
professional fiction project was
Ravenloft: Vampire of the Mists,
which came about when I answered
an audition. I won the job after
writing a sample chapter and an
outline, and then I was told, “You
have three months to write it…
Go!” What was I going to do, blow
my chance? So I hit the ground
running, and I haven’t stopped!
Do you have any tips for writers
working on novels of their own?
You have to make the time for
your writing. Make it a habit,
make it a routine. Work it into
your schedule and do it at a regular
time, preferably always in the
same place. Also, find a scent
that you like—candle, incense,
whatever. Scent is processed by
the same part of the brain as
memory. Doing all those things
regularly will make your brain go,
“Aha, I’m in writing mode now!”
But most of all: don’t quit! a
